Isn’t it wonderful to see good things come to good people? When you’ve done all that you can do, the songs says to “Just Stand!”. She was standing and crying as former President George Hudson, escorted her to the front of the room.
I first met Carrolena, when I, a member of the Eastern Section, saw her running around the ABA, with Iris Carr, collecting funds and supporters for a home for the American Bridge Association. ( And raising funds so that the ABA would be represented in International bridge competition.) I was one of those volunteers who worked in the basement home in Mt Vernon with Ken Cox and Edris Madison Sparrow —long before computerization. When a new Executive Secretary was elected, the files had to find another home. Richard Bowling(built) & George Johnson(financed) putting their heads and money together to design & construct the marque which still stands in front of the headquarters in Atlanta.
Carrolena has served the ABA diligently and continuously for 43 years. She served as the ABA Public Relations Chairperson at a time when local politicians were ushered into the Open Meetings , and when the local newspapers knew that the ABA was in town. She arranged all of this!
Carrolena held several jobs in the Mid-Atlantic, but it was in 2011-15 that she served as Section Vice President—at the same time editing the MAS Newsletter. She served as the charter chair of the ABA Foundation and is still involved in raising funds for the 24 scholarships allotted yearly to deserving students. Remember when ABA partnerships were selected to play in World Bridge Federation events? Carrolena helped raise funds so that attending would be affordable.
It’s difficult for me to list her jobs while a member of the WBU: president of the Kings & Queens, secretary of the DuBridgettet & WBU, member of the WBU Nominating, Budget, Transportation, Hospitality Scholarship, Public Relations Committees, co-editor of the MAS newsletter assisting Iris Carr.
We congratulate Carrolena and we want the Southern Section to know that it now has one of the MAS jewels.
